You call timeout because the other team went on a 4-0 run. Everyone does. And it's mostly wasted.
The run already happened
A timeout can't take points off the board. The only thing it can change is what happens next — which means the question isn't "are we on a bad run?" It's "do I have information that changes the next rally?"
Call timeout when you can say one of these
- "They're serving zone 5 every time — move up a step." A tactical fix a player can execute immediately.
- "Next rotation their weak server is up. Side out here and we run three points." A map of the next two minutes.
- "You're pressing. Next ball, just pass 2 and let the offense work." A reset for one specific player, said to that player.
One message. One sentence each. If you're still talking at the second whistle, you had nothing.
Track it
For one match, write down why you called each timeout and what you said. You'll never burn one on a scoreboard reaction again.
