Walk into most gyms and you'll see eleven kids watching one kid hit. That's not practice. That's a queue with a volleyball at the front.

The five sins

  1. Lines longer than three. Contacts per kid per minute is the only stat your practice plan has. Count it.
  2. Drills without a score. If nobody can win, nobody competes.
  3. Coach-centered ball initiation. Every ball off a coach's hand is a rep your setter and passers didn't get.
  4. Blocked reps forever. Ten identical reps in a row grooves the motion — then the brain checks out. Randomize sooner than feels comfortable.
  5. No ugly reps. If every drill is clean, you've built a team that panics the first time a ball is chaos. Chaos is the sport.

Fix one thing this week

Don't rewrite your whole plan. Kill your longest line. That alone can double contacts for the bottom half of your roster — which is where matches are lost.
